Nuevas Head Start |
|
Since 1981, Vistas Nuevas Head
Start (VNHS) has operated in Detroit's Southwest Head Start service area, and has grown to be the
largest Head Start provider in the city. Currently, operating from multiple program sites,
VNHS provides high-quality comprehensive
services.
Mission
VNHS is an integral part of the community and in the lives of children and families.
It is a federally funded, comprehensive program serving low-income children three to five years of age, special needs children and their families.
The focus is on parents in order to empower them to provide for themselves and their families while preparing for the future. We are prepared to meet the challenges and changes faced by the children, families, and community we serve.
As a bilingual, multicultural program, VNHS is sensitive to the cultural differences, strengths and uniqueness of our community.
The traditions and celebrations, which bring hope, joy, and unity to the families served, are respected.
The goal of VNHS is to continually develop collaborative projects to integrate services and more efficiently utilize community resources and funding.
The multifaceted program approach, which includes training opportunities and shared facilities, establishes us as an authority in early childhood education and childcare in Southwest
Detroit.
Our vision is that VNHS will remain at the forefront of innovative service delivery and a true leader in the community for children and families.

Services
|
Half-day pre-school classes:
Low income children ages 3-5 receive educational and social preparation for entering school.
Full-day services:
In order to assist our working families, Vistas Nuevas Head
Start (VNHS) provides a limited number of full-day
classrooms.
Home-based services: A special program allows VNHS families access to head start services on an individualized basis in their homes. This is an excellent program option for families where the parent may have difficulty getting to a center, for a child not quite mature enough for the classroom setting, for additional one-on-one services, and for children with great special needs.
"Wrap-around" services: Full-day child-care is provided through collaborative agreements with other child care centers, and
"wrap-around" service for extended care is made available to VNHS families through day care homes and in collaboration with other human service organizations.
Nutrition: Each child receives breakfast, lunch and a snack,
two-thirds of his/her daily nutritional requirement.
Health care assistance:
VNHS provides parents with the help they need to access medical, dental, mental health and services for children with disabilities/special needs.
