Barat
House has been committed to preventing and breaking the on-going cycles of child abuse and neglect since
1925 by strengthening the development of family relationships and fostering reunifications when
feasible.
Barat Child and Family Services continues to make a difference, strengthening families and keeping children safe from abuse and neglect. BARAT House provides stable, caring environment for up to 24 girls ages 13-17, who have been abused and neglected. The girls participate in individual, group, and family therapy, and work towards making positive, self-affirming lifestyle choices.
BARAT House provides long-term care with an average stay of 10-12 months.
To prepare the girls for independence, BARAT house provides workshops focusing on finance
focusing on financial management, finding suitable housing, nutrition and job readiness.

Seventy-two
percent (72%) of residents earned a 2.32 or higher cumulative grade
point average.

Seventy-one
percent (71%) of the residents are discharged to a less
structured setting and 84% of those are able to maintain their
placement in their setting.

Seventy
percent (70%) passed a computer literacy test at the end of
2005.
Community support of the mission has come from the University of Michigan Volunteers who mentored and tutored Barat House residents, Girl Scouts of Metro Detroit taught 8 week courses in Human Sexuality; Comerica Bank conducted financial literacy training, West Bloomfield Library donated over 118 books; The Bartech Group provided educational and many valuable fun outings.
United Way Community Services funded educational assistance programs enabling 72% of Barat’s residents to maintain a 2.32 GPA
or better.
Barat Child and Family Services was one of the beneficiaries of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association, North American International Auto Show Charity Preview.

Substance Abuse Screening & Referral
Youth Assistance Program (YAP) is a program that provides services for youth 7 to 17 years of age who have experienced probation, status offenses, or who are at-risk of entering the juvenile justice system. Services provided through the program include but are not limited to substance abuse, truancy from home/school, teen parenting, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) awareness, school drop out,
G.E.D. assistance and violent behavior.
